James Christopher

James’s background is in advertising, where he developed a distinctive and humorous writing style. He began writing amusing tales of scatology and sexual mishaps, but that didn’t go down well with Vodafone, so this lead to his first stand up gig in January 2005.

Since then, James has been writing and gigging solidly, all over the North and occasionally in London. He completed a busy stint at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe which saw him perform over 30 gigs in 15 days.

In October 2006, James began promoting and compering Black Comedy @ The Black Swan, a monthly gig in his native York. In February 2007, Black Comedy went fortnightly due to it’s popularity. In February 2008, James started a second York based night at Bar 1331, showcasing some of the country’s top headliners. James is also the resident host of Carnivale69 Comedy in Hull, a monthly stand up and comedy cabaret night.

James is also a member of the ComedySportz improvisational workshop lead by Brainne Edge, which runs weekly at The Comedy Store, Manchester. Improv and compering have helped James develop his stage presence, which is amiable and friendly, but with an abrasive edge. His material is intelligent yet self deprecating, never losing sight of the fact that the joke’s on him.

A keen writer, James has had several articles about comedy published in the arts magazine Aesthetica, including an interview with US stand up Doug Stanhope.

“Bespectacled and beguiling, his skewed, inventively helmed anecdotes and tales of perpetual outsiderdom could warm the hearts of those cryogenically sealed.” Anthony J Brown

“Intelligent, original material, really well-delivered. He's a friendly, easy-going compere so seeing him perform a tight, excellent gag-filled set was a real surprise. He reminds me of Woody Allen in that he's a likable geek who makes some great observations.” Andy Watson

"James was booked to do the middle spot for me on a bill with MC Jason Cook. Due to the gales, the A1 was completely shut leaving Jason 100 miles away. I asked James to MC the opening of the show and bring Dave Longley on to the 364 sold out gig. He did an absolutley stirling job... he kept it tight, mixed his chat with material well and kept them laughing. He's got paid work out of me on the back of his professional performance."   Peter Vincent
